H&E Equipment Services (NASDAQ:HEES) Stock Performs Better Than Its Underlying Earnings Growth Over Last Five Years

Simply Wall St ·  Oct 29 18:42

If you buy and hold a stock for many years, you'd hope to be making a profit. Furthermore, you'd generally like to see the share price rise faster than the market. But H&E Equipment Services, Inc. (NASDAQ:HEES) has fallen short of that second goal, with a share price rise of 54% over five years, which is below the market return. On a brighter note, more newer shareholders are probably rather content with the 37% share price gain over twelve months.

The past week has proven to be lucrative for H&E Equipment Services investors, so let's see if fundamentals drove the company's five-year performance.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Over half a decade, H&E Equipment Services managed to grow its earnings per share at 14% a year. The EPS growth is more impressive than the yearly share price gain of 9% over the same period. So one could conclude that the broader market has become more cautious towards the stock.

The company's earnings per share (over time) is depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers).

It is of course excellent to see how H&E Equipment Services has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. You can see how its balance sheet has strengthened (or weakened) over time in this free interactive graphic.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for H&E Equipment Services the TSR over the last 5 years was 81%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

H&E Equipment Services shareholders have received returns of 40% over twelve months (even including dividends), which isn't far from the general market return. Most would be happy with a gain, and it helps that the year's return is actually better than the average return over five years, which was 13%. It is possible that management foresight will bring growth well into the future, even if the share price slows down. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand H&E Equipment Services better, we need to consider many other factors. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for H&E Equipment Services (of which 1 is significant!) you should know about.
