The U.S. stock market rose on the 28th. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 273.17 points at 42,387.57, while the Nasdaq ended trading at 18,567.19, up 48.58 points. Concerns about escalating tensions in the Middle East eased as Israel's limited retaliation against Iran kept the situation in check, leading to an increase in stock prices after the opening. Expectations of strong earnings reports from major technology companies this week led to continued buying. The Nasdaq faltered towards the end due to rising long-term interest rates, but the market remained firm throughout the day.
Despite the rise in US stocks, the Tokyo market started trading with profit-taking selling following the significant rebound from the previous day. The Nikkei average fell to the 38,400 yen range, but after the round of selling, large-cap stocks such as mega-banks in the financial sector started to rise steadily, leading to an expansion in the upward movement. The Nikkei average turned the tables. In the afternoon, the market remained relatively unchanged, with trading value at 3.5 trillion yen, resulting in quiet trading. However, a strong movement was confirmed with a high closing trade.
The Nikkei average at the close was 38,903.68 yen, up 298.15 yen (+0.77%) from the previous day. The trading volume on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market was 1,586.52 million shares. The trading value was 3.592 trillion yen. By industry, banking, securities and commodity futures trading, other financial sectors, mining, nonferrous metals, among others, rose, while only three sectors - glass and ceramics, metal products, transportation equipment - experienced declines. In the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market, 77% of stocks rose, while 19% fell.
