As of the close on the 28th, the Nikkei average constituent stocks had 197 stocks rising, 27 stocks falling, and 1 stock remaining unchanged.
At the end of last week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average in the U.S. closed at 42,114.40, down 259.96 points, while the Nasdaq closed at 18,518.61, up 103.12 points. The Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index exceeded expectations, leading to buying on expectations of a soft landing. After the opening bell, the Dow fell due to declines in McDonald's and rising long-term interest rates, with selling pressure increasing towards the end. On the other hand, the Nasdaq remained firm throughout the day due to positive buying expectations for major tech company earnings. With a mixed performance in the U.S. stock market, the Nikkei closed lower today due to selling pressure following the ruling party losing the majority in last weekend's Lower House elections. However, there is a possibility that the market had already factored in concerns about the Lower House election results, leading to a turnaround in the morning session and a significant increase in stock prices. Additionally, the view that the Bank of Japan may find it difficult to raise rates early due to domestic political uncertainty led to a rise in the U.S. dollar against the yen to the 153 yen level. With stock buybacks and a weaker yen as drivers, the Nikkei rose briefly to the 38,700 yen level.
At the closing bell, the Nikkei average was 38,605.53, up 691.61 yen (+1.82%) compared to the previous business day. The trading volume on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market was 1.78266 billion shares, with a turnover of 3.8858 trillion yen. By industry, transportation equipment, pharmaceuticals, marine transportation, securities/commodity futures trading, and electric appliances all rose, while only the 4 sectors of mining, chemicals, petroleum/coal, and precision instruments recorded a decline. The number of advancing stocks on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market was 91%, while declining stocks accounted for 7%.
