The Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index exceeded financial estimates, boosting expectations of a soft landing, leading to buying after the opening. However, later on, Dow was weighed down by McDonald's (MCD) decline and fell due to selling triggered by concerns of rising long-term interest rates, with the decline widening towards the end of the session. On the other hand, the NASDAQ remained strong throughout the day on expectations of earnings from major high-tech companies next week, ending mixed. In terms of sectors, property service saw a significant rise, while telecommunication services declined.
Meta Platforms (META), which operates the social media Facebook (FB), raised its target stock price on the backdrop of analysts' positive expectations for next week's earnings announcement. The company also reportedly agreed to a long-term partnership with Reuters News to utilize its content with AI chatbots, leading to an increase in stock price. Digital Realty Trust (DLR), a technology-related real estate management company, saw an increase following an upward revision of the target stock price by analysts. Footwear manufacturer Deckers Outdoor Corp (DECK) exceeded sales expectations in quarterly earnings and raised its full-year outlook, resulting in a rise. Tapestry (TPR), which operates luxury brands such as Coach and Kate Spade, experienced a stock price increase after receiving a court ruling halting the acquisition of competitor Capri (CPRI), while Capri (CPRI) plummeted.
Alphabet (GOOG), which operates the search engine company Google, saw a rise as Waymo, its autonomous driving car development division, secured a $5.6 billion funding. McDonald's (MCD), the fast-food chain operator, declined after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced further cases of food poisoning. Boeing (BA), the aircraft manufacturer, experienced a decline amidst reports of exploring various options including selling its space business.
The VIX index, which indicates investors' fear sentiment, rose to 20.51.
