Competitor Lucid Group's CEO Peter Rawlinson recently stated in an interview that he believes autonomous driving autos will not be implemented quickly.
In an interview with Semafor, Rawlinson said: "This is like refining gold to 99.9999% - the first few 9s are easy, but the last 0.01% is difficult. I think this will happen in the 2030s."
Rawlinson also stated, "From a machinery perspective", Lucid has the best autos in the world, but has always faced challenges in autonomous driving capabilities.
"I am personally responsible for this work, and we are now accelerating this work," he said.
Rawlinson said that people "severely underestimate" how difficult the final step to achieve fully autonomous driving autos is.
Rawlinson previously worked at tesla. Before making the above remarks, tesla had just held a Robotaxi launch event, showcasing its automated taxi Cybercab.
In the interview, Rawlinson once again praised Lucid's technological advancements as better than tesla's, while adding that tesla and Musk have been "distracted", which could be implying his political behavior.
"Clearly, we have the best technology in the world. We have now taken over tesla's mantle. We have the best technology," Rawlinson said.
