Qualcomm is partnering with Alphabet to develop ai systems for autos.

Zhixun Finance learned that Qualcomm (QCOM.US) announced on Tuesday that it will collaborate with Alphabet (GOOGL.US) under Google to provide a combination of chips and software, allowing auto manufacturers to utilize the technologies of both companies to develop their own ai voice assistants. On Tuesday, Qualcomm stated that it is working with Google to develop an Android auto operating system that can run smoothly on Qualcomm chips.

Qualcomm's chips have long powered phones running Google's Android operating system. The company has expanded its business into autos, with its chips being used in car dashboards and also in self-driving systems used by General Motors (GM.US) and other auto manufacturers.

Based on their long-standing partnership, both parties will use a variety of technologies including Snapdragon Digital Chassis, Android Automotive OS, and Google Cloud to provide a standardized reference platform for developing cabin solutions with the help of generative ai. This platform, supported by Google AI, will enable intuitive voice assistants, immersive map experiences, and real-time driver predictions through Snapdragon heterogeneous edge AI system-level chips (SoCs) and Qualcomm AI Hub. Qualcomm and Google state that auto manufacturers will be able to create their unique voice assistants using the joint products and Google's ai technology, without the need for the driver's phone.

The core of this collaboration project is to develop a standardized reference platform based on Snapdragon heterogeneous edge AI SoC and Qualcomm AI Hub, which will simplify the deployment of ai models in car cabins, including visual, audio, and voice applications. Google AI will support this framework to achieve more intuitive voice assistants, immersive map experiences, real-time updates, and to predict and meet driver's needs.

Nakul Duggal, Manager of Qualcomm's auto group, mentioned the relationship between Qualcomm and Google: "Usually, we operate together, but also independently - we plan many things together, but we face our own customers separately. We decided to approach this issue from a different perspective, as it can reduce a lot of friction and confusion."

On Tuesday, Qualcomm also launched two new chips, one called Snapdragon Cockpit Elite for car dashboards, and the other called Snapdragon Ride Elite for self-driving functions. The company stated that Daimler-Benz Group plans to use Snapdragon Elite Cabin chips in future vehicles, but the two companies did not specify when or in which vehicles the chips will appear.
