Possible Bearish Signals With Cytokinetics Insiders Disposing Stock

Simply Wall St ·  Oct 22 21:28

Over the past year, many Cytokinetics, Incorporated (NASDAQ:CYTK) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Cytokinetics

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the CEO, President & Director, Robert Blum, for US$1.2m worth of shares, at about US$52.60 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$53.81. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. It is worth noting that this sale was only 7.1% of Robert Blum's holding.

Does Cytokinetics Boast High Insider Ownership?

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Cytokinetics insiders own about US$31m worth of shares. That equates to 0.5% of the company. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
