At the closing on the 22nd, the number of advancing stocks in the Nikkei average constituents was 25, declining stocks were 199, and unchanged stocks were 1.
The U.S. stock market on the 21st was mixed. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 42,931.60, down 344.31 points, while the Nasdaq ended at 18,540.01, up 50.46 points. Concerns about rising long-term interest rates led to selling pressure, causing a decline after the opening. The Dow faced increased selling pressure due to worse-than-expected economic indicators for September, leading to a weak performance throughout the day. The Nasdaq, supported by the rise of semiconductor company Nvidia and mobile device maker Apple, managed to recover into positive territory despite fluctuations and closed mixed.
Due to the mixed performance of US stocks, the Tokyo market started directionless. After the opening, the Nikkei average remained flat at the previous day's closing level, but after 9:30 a.m., there was significant selling in the futures market which expanded the decline. Concerns arose as media reports suggested that the ruling party is struggling in the House of Representatives elections, and there were also wide-ranging sell-offs due to vigilance towards US government regulations on China. The Nikkei average was seen falling to 38,200.82 yen, marking the 10th consecutive negative trend.
The Nikkei average at the close was 38,411.96 yen, down 542.64 yen (-1.39%) from the previous day. The trading volume on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market was 1.684 billion shares. The turnover was 3.8079 trillion yen. By industry sector, machinery, construction, real estate, securities and commodity futures trading, and banking industries declined, while only marine transportation and rubber products sectors saw an increase. The percentage of advancing stocks on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market was 8%, while declining stocks were 90%.
