Gateway Investment Advisers, an investment company focusing on low-volatility stock strategies, made significant adjustments to some of its key investments in the telecommunications and semiconductor sectors in the third quarter.
Gateway Investment Advisers more than doubled its investment in Verizon (VZ.N), reduced its stake in AT&T (T.N), increased its holdings of Intel (INTC.O), and significantly reduced its shareholding in Micron Technology (MU.O). Gateway disclosed these stock transactions in documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
In response to requests for comments on the investment changes, Gateway stated via email: "These trades are part of routine rebalancing and do not reflect any forward-looking assessment of individual companies."
As of the end of July, Gateway managed assets worth $9.1 billion. The company's flagship strategy involves investing in common stocks while actively managing written index call options and purchased index put options. Since its inception on January 1, 1988, it has successfully achieved the goal of 'providing most of the long-term returns in the domestic stock market with less than half the risk.'
Gateway sold 208,400 shares of AT&T stock, holding 1.6 million shares at the end of the third quarter. AT&T's stock rose by 31% in the first nine months of 2024, while the S&P 500 index rose by 21%. From the fourth quarter to the present, AT&T's stock has fallen by 1%, while the index has risen by 2%.
It is noted that this telecommunications company was once a dividend aristocrat, but currently has a dividend yield of 5%, which is attractive to some investors. Prior to AT&T's third-quarter earnings report scheduled for October 23rd, at least one analyst holds an optimistic view on its stock.
Verizon will release its third-quarter earnings report one day before AT&T. In September, the company agreed to acquire fiber optic internet provider Frontier Communications for approximately $20 billion in cash. This transaction is expected to be completed by 2026.
Verizon's stock rose by 19% in the first nine months of 2024, while it has dropped by 2% from the fourth quarter to date.
Intel's stock lost more than half of its value in the first nine months of this year, and currently the stock has dropped by 3% in the last quarter of 2024.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the troubled chip manufacturer received a potential acquisition proposal from Qualcomm (QCOM.O). Intel and Qualcomm have not responded to Barron's requests for comment on this report. Some investors believe that Intel has lost its direction in recent years, but as we reported at the end of September, Intel's latest server and mobile PC chips have been well-received.
Gateway increased its holdings by 141,820 shares of Intel stock in the third quarter, bringing its total investment to 904,200 shares.
The company sold 161,980 shares of Micron Technology stock, reducing its stake in this chip manufacturer to 58,000 shares.
Micron's CEO Sanjay Mehrotra has adopted a trading plan to sell up to $20 million in stocks. Considering the stock's strong performance this year, rising by 22% in the first nine months, this is not surprising. Micron's stock has risen by 7% from the fourth quarter to date. Strong demand for artificial intelligence has boosted Micron's profitability.
