Japanese stocks of American depositary receipts (ADRs), compared to the Tokyo Stock Exchange (converted at 1 dollar to 149.50 yen), Japan Post <6178>, SMC <6273>, Tokyo Electron <8035>, Nidec <6594>, Sumitomo Corporation <8053>, Tokio Marine Holdings <8766>, NTT <9432>, etc., rose and overall buying prevailed. The settlement value of Chicago Nikkei 225 futures was 39,170 yen, up 160 yen from the Osaka daytime market.

The U.S. stock market continued to rise. The Dow Jones closed at 43,275.91, up 36.86 points, and the Nasdaq closed at 18,489.55, up 115.94 points. The number of housing starts was lackluster, mixed after the opening. Profit-taking sales from near record highs and a retreat in optimistic economic views pushed the Dow lower throughout the day. The Nasdaq was led by the rise of Apple (AAPL) and semiconductor Nvidia (NVDA) among others, and the decline in long-term interest rates supported it, leading the overall market higher. In the final stages, the Dow also returned to positive territory, hitting new record highs for the past few days and closing.

In the New York foreign exchange market on the 18th, the dollar-yen fell from 150.08 yen to 149.51 yen, closing at 149.37 yen. The decrease in U.S. housing starts in September led to predominant dollar selling due to the decline in long-term interest rates. In addition, concerns about corrective measures for the weak yen by the Japanese authorities led to a retreat in yen selling. The euro-dollar rose from 1.0847 dollars to 1.0867 dollars, closing at 1.0870 dollars.

On the 18th, NY crude oil futures for November declined (NYMEX crude oil November futures closing price: $69.22, down $1.45).
