US stock market continued to rise. Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 43,275.91, up 36.86 points, while the Nasdaq ended trading at 18,489.55, up 115.94 points.

Housing starts were lackluster, leading to mixed trading after the opening. Profit-taking selling near record highs and a pullback in the optimistic economic outlook kept the Dow soft throughout the day. The Nasdaq was buoyed by the rise in mobile device maker Apple (AAPL) and semiconductor company Nvidia (NVDA), as well as a decline in long-term interest rates, pushing the market up. Towards the end of the session, the Dow also recovered into positive territory, hitting new record highs for consecutive days before closing. In terms of sectors, Healthcare equipment and services rose while Energy declined.

Apple's (AAPL) mobile devices have seen strong sales of the iPhone 16 in China compared to the previous model, leading to increased expectations. Nvidia (NVDA) in the semiconductor sector rose due to an investment upgrade by analysts. Intuitive Surgical (ISRG), a surgical equipment manufacturer, received positive feedback for its strong earnings report, leading to a significant increase. Comerica (CMA), a regional bank, saw an increase in net interest income and a share buyback plan in its quarterly earnings, leading to a rise.

Netflix (NFLX) in video streaming exceeded expectations in subscriber numbers in its quarterly earnings, with continued optimism in the positive outlook prompting buying. American Express (AXP), a credit card company, fell in its quarterly earnings as consumer spending was noted to be cautious, with guidance falling short of expectations. CVS Health (CVS), a drugstore chain, indicated in its interim quarterly earnings that rising medical costs would result in performance falling below expectations, leading to a withdrawal of full-year guidance. In addition, the company announced the removal of its CEO, resulting in a significant decline.

Esther George, President of the Atlanta Fed with voting rights this year, reiterated the need for patience regarding rate cuts.
