FCC rules prohibit the use of alert system tones or wireless emergency alert tones for any purpose other than official notifications to avoid confusion when using tones, alert fatigue among listeners, and erroneous activation of system data elements contained in the alert tones. The FCC also mentioned that ESPN has a history of violating FCC rules, having been fined $0.28 million in 2015 for emergency alert violations and $0.02 million in 2021.
