Even Though Helix Energy Solutions Group (NYSE:HLX) Has Lost US$62m Market Cap in Last 7 Days, Shareholders Are Still up 140% Over 3 Years

Simply Wall St ·  Oct 16 18:24

Helix Energy Solutions Group, Inc. (NYSE:HLX) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 19% in the last quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been very strong. In fact, the share price is up a full 140% compared to three years ago. To some, the recent share price pullback wouldn't be surprising after such a good run. Only time will tell if there is still too much optimism currently reflected in the share price.

Although Helix Energy Solutions Group has shed US$62m from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

We know that Helix Energy Solutions Group has been profitable in the past. However, it made a loss in the last twelve months, suggesting profit may be an unreliable metric at this stage. So it might be better to look at other metrics to try to understand the share price.

It could be that the revenue growth of 30% per year is viewed as evidence that Helix Energy Solutions Group is growing. In that case, the company may be sacrificing current earnings per share to drive growth, and maybe shareholder's faith in better days ahead will be rewarded.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 34% in the last year, Helix Energy Solutions Group shareholders lost 6.3%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 3%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend.
