There's No Escaping Cohu, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:COHU) Muted Revenues

Simply Wall St ·  Oct 15 19:26

With a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.4x Cohu, Inc. (NASDAQ:COHU) may be sending bullish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all the Semiconductor companies in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 4.5x and even P/S higher than 11x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does Cohu's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Cohu could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. It seems that many are expecting the poor revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the P/S ratio. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Cohu's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 33%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 39% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 6.9% as estimated by the seven analysts watching the company. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 38%.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Cohu's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

What Does Cohu's P/S Mean For Investors?

We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of Cohu's analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking revenue is contributing to its low P/S. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
