Sumitomo Corporation (hereafter, “Sumitomo Corporation”), Kawasaki Kisen Co., Ltd. (hereafter, “Kawasaki Kisen”), and Hilcorp Alaska (hereafter, “Hillcorp”) have agreed to conduct a CCS (Note 1) business feasibility study in the United States and Alaska, and a joint investigation agreement has been concluded between the three companies. In this business feasibility study, the three companies will conduct a business feasibility study aimed at constructing a series of CCS value chains that aggregate CO2 within Japan, transport it to the United States and Alaska on large liquefied CO2 carriers, and press in and store it. This is the first joint investigation for commercialization of cross-border CCS between Japan and the US, and we aim to commercialize it in cooperation with the Japanese and US governments. On 2024/10/11, the “4th Japan-US CCUS (Note 2) Working Group” co-hosted by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) was held, and a signing ceremony was held to conclude a joint investigation agreement on this feasibility study.

The Japanese government is promoting the improvement of the business environment for the commencement of CCS business by 2030 (Note 3). In response to this policy, in 2024/4, the two countries indicated a policy to evaluate the possibility of CO2 transportation and storage hubs between Japan and Alaska in the fact sheet (Note 4) in the Japan-US summit joint statement. While studies on CCS business potential in Alaska are underway between the Japanese and US governments, Sumitomo Corporation, Kawasaki Kisen, and Hillcorp will now conduct this business feasibility study, which includes building a CCS value chain between Japan and Alaska and examining the possibility of storing CO2 in Alaska. Specifically, each company will conduct technical surveys related to underground CO2 storage, including storage capacity, technical requirements surveys for liquefied CO2 vessels, and business environment reviews, etc. based on their knowledge and experience to explore feasibility.

Oil and gas field development has been underway in the United States and Alaska since the 1950s, and the total storage volume of the CCS business is expected to be 50 gigatons (Note 5), which is 50 years of Japan's CO2 emissions. In addition to the fact that data accumulated through oil and gas development can be used for CO2 storage, it is also recognized as a promising base for CCS business because existing infrastructure such as LNG bases, port facilities, and pipelines have been developed. Going forward, we will contribute to carbon neutral through carbon management technology development between the two countries.

■Sumitomo Corporation
The Sumitomo Corporation Group has positioned “climate change mitigation” as one of the important social issues, and is taking on the challenge of achieving carbon neutral and a sustainable energy cycle by 2050. Sumitomo Corporation sees CCUS as one of its important instruments, and aims to contribute to improving the sustainability of domestic industries and increase the corporate value of the Group by promoting businesses that contribute to Japan's decarbonization through public-private partnerships.

■Kawasaki Kisen
Based on the long-term environmental guideline “Environmental Vision 2050,” the Kawasaki Kisen Group is promoting various initiatives aimed at reducing and decarbonizing its own company and supporting the reduction and decarbonization of society. In the CCS field, the world's first commercial liquefied CO2 transport for CCS is scheduled to begin next year. We aim to realize a sustainable society and improve corporate value by utilizing the knowledge obtained through the operation of liquefied CO2 transport vessels, which will be launched sequentially domestically and internationally, into future business development, starting with this project.
