Finance and Economics APP learned that on Wednesday, data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) showed that in September, Tesla (TSLA.US) manufactured approximately 88,321 electric vehicles in China, with a year-on-year growth of 19.2%. The delivery volume of Model 3 and Model Y cars increased by 1.9% month-on-month. According to Bloomberg's calculations, Tesla's deliveries in China in the third quarter achieved the best quarterly performance ever, with the delivery volume from the Shanghai Gigafactory increasing for the third consecutive month.

The electric vehicle manufacturer has announced its global quarterly delivery volume, but has not yet disclosed the specific sales data in China. Based on estimates, the total for the third quarter is expected to reach 249,135 units, surpassing the previous peak of the fourth quarter of 2023 at 248,686 units. In addition, despite an increase in sales in China, the global delivery volume in the third quarter was 0.463 million units, lower than the 0.464 million units some analysts had previously expected.

Chinese competitor BYD set a new monthly record with its Dynasty and Ocean series of electric and plug-in hybrid cars, with passenger vehicle sales in September increasing by 45.56% year-on-year to 417,603 units.

BYD's filing shows that a total of 33,012 BYD vehicles were sold overseas, accounting for 7.9% of total sales. With the release of September data, Tesla's electric vehicle sales in China increased by 12% in the third quarter, marking the first quarterly growth this year.

In China, the world's largest automobile market, competitors like Nio Inc (9866.HK) and Xpeng (9868.HK) are actively introducing more affordable models. To encourage consumers, Tesla has been expanding its promotional policies. The company extended zero-interest financing for selected Model 3 and Model Y models until the end of October.

According to foreign reports, Tesla also plans to start producing its popular but outdated six-seater version of the Model Y in China starting from the end of 2025.

The electric automaker will launch its self-driving taxi on October 10th and plans to introduce fully autonomous driving (FSD) advanced driver assistance software in China and Europe next year, currently awaiting regulatory approval. Musk stated that he hopes other new products will open up new growth curves for the company.

It is worth mentioning that Tesla and other Chinese electric automakers benefit from a government subsidy of RMB 0.02 million (equivalent to $2,830) to encourage owners to trade in their old vehicles for new ones. Recently, the Chinese government introduced an economic stimulus plan at the end of September, and during the National Day golden holiday ending on October 7th, the car showrooms were crowded with people, with this boost expected to continue into October.

The Austin-based company also celebrated last month the successful export of the 1 millionth vehicle from its Shanghai Gigafactory. Grace Tao, Vice President Global, mentioned on social media that Tesla cars manufactured in China have gained recognition in overseas markets like Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. This milestone highlights the Shanghai factory's role as a primary automotive export center for Tesla.

According to reports, the Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory started delivering Model 3 vehicles to consumers in January 2020 and began delivering Tesla Model Y vehicles a year later. In April 2021, the Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory officially began exporting cars to foreign markets.
