Investors Push Mohawk Industries (NYSE:MHK) 3.4% Lower This Week, Company's Increasing Losses Might Be to Blame

Simply Wall St ·  Oct 9 00:54

These days it's easy to simply buy an index fund, and your returns should (roughly) match the market. But you can significantly boost your returns by picking above-average stocks. For example, the Mohawk Industries, Inc. (NYSE:MHK) share price is up 90% in the last 1 year, clearly besting the market return of around 30% (not including dividends). So that should have shareholders smiling. Zooming out, the stock is actually down 13% in the last three years.

Although Mohawk Industries has shed US$346m from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Over the last twelve months, Mohawk Industries actually shrank its EPS by 14%. This was, in part, due to extraordinary items impacting earning in the last twelve months.

Given the share price gain, we doubt the market is measuring progress with EPS. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.

Unfortunately Mohawk Industries' fell 4.2% over twelve months. So using a snapshot of key business metrics doesn't give us a good picture of why the market is bidding up the stock.

It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Mohawk Industries has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 90% in the last twelve months. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 5%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Mohawk Industries better, we need to consider many other factors.
