Shopee Bridges Gap For Rural Sellers In Malaysia's E-Commerce Boom

Business Today ·  Oct 8 15:07

As Malaysia's e-commerce landscape continues to flourish, Shopee is actively connecting sellers from the East Coast and East Malaysia with customers nationwide. With nine out of ten Malaysians favouring online shopping over traditional retail and half adopting it permanently, Shopee is helping to overcome geographical barriers by providing rural sellers direct access to millions of buyers.

This shift is crucial for sellers in the East Coast and East Malaysia, where logistical challenges have historically hindered growth. In 2023, experts estimated that Malaysia's e-commerce market would grow by 7% annually, reaching RM1.9 trillion by 2027, emphasising the need for efficient logistics to link rural sellers with urban buyers.

"Through this initiative, creative thinking and innovation can be highlighted, leading to the development of various innovations that benefit the people," Shopee Malaysia Head of Marketing and Business Intelligence Tan Ming Kit said.

He added that Shopee is committed to empowering sellers from all corners of Malaysia.

Many sellers have experienced transformative impacts through Shopee and one such example is Siti Nur Nazifa Mazlan from Kota Bharu, Kelantan, who turned to Shopee to support her family after losing her parents.

"Shopee has allowed me to support my siblings without leaving home. I can take care of them while building my business. It's been life-changing," she said.

Shopee's enhanced logistics capabilities have significantly improved delivery times. Klang Valley buyers can now expect parcels from the East Coast in two days or less, and from East Malaysia within three to four days.

Muhammad Faizz, owner of Keropok Mfaizz in Besut, Terengganu, has fulfilled over 100,000 orders since joining Shopee, with an average of 100 orders daily. "Thanks to Shopee, our keropok lekor is now reaching customers in Selangor and Johor, something we never thought possible," he said.
