On the evening of October 1st local time, Iran launched a large number of missiles at Israel in retaliation for the recent killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and an Iranian commander in Lebanon. This is the largest missile attack on Israel in Iran's history.

It is widely estimated that the attacks on Israel involved at least 180 ballistic missiles. Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Salami also claimed that on the evening of October 1st, Iran launched 200 missiles at Israel. The US Department of Defense stated that Iran's missile attack on Israel was approximately double the size of the attack on April 14th.

Most of the missiles were intercepted by Israeli and US defense systems, with no known casualties reported in Israel. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard claimed that 90% of the missiles successfully hit their targets in Israel, and warned that any Israeli response would result in a 'devastating' attack on the Jewish state.

Videos released by Iranian official media claim to show that the missiles successfully hit targets, including the heart of Tel Aviv, an airbase, and a civilian airport.

Iran's foreign minister stated that their actions were over unless the Israeli regime decides on further retaliation. Prior to this, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu strongly responded by saying that Iran had made a 'big mistake' tonight and would pay the price for it.

The Israeli Civil Emergency Authority has lifted all restrictions, and the people of Tel Aviv have emerged from the air-raid shelters and returned to the streets.

The White House stated that Iran's attack on Israel was evidently "failed and ineffective." USA National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan described Iran's attack as a "significant escalation." Sullivan mentioned that the attack will have consequences, and the USA is consulting with Israel on next steps or possible responses.

Iran stated that it did not provide a warning to the USA in advance but did consult with Russia. The Iranian President stated on X that he is not seeking war but will decisively confront any threats from Israel.

The attack occurred after Israel deployed ground forces to southern Lebanon, escalating the assault on Iran's most important proxy, Hezbollah.

Iran's previous direct missile launch at Israel was in April, which was apparently pre-coordinated, resulting in limited damage. This attack, however, came without warning, signaling a sharp escalation of hostilities between Iran and Israel. The surge in conflict edges the Middle East towards the brink of a full-scale war, potentially drawing the USA, committed to defending Israel, into the situation.

Hours before the warning of Iran's possible missile attacks, the international benchmark crude oil price, Brent crude oil, surged for the day, with intraday gains expanding to 5%. Gold prices also rose. The US stock market experienced a major decline.

Israel's significant retaliatory action may arrive in the next few hours.

Barak Ravid, an Israeli journalist for the USA news website Axios, told CNN that he expects Israel to launch a major retaliatory strike against Iran in the next few hours.

The Israel Defense Forces have vowed to "strike hard" at targets in the Middle East. An IDF spokesperson said, "Iran took a serious action tonight, escalating the situation in the Middle East. We will take action at the location and time of our choosing based on the guidance of the political echelon."

Iran-backed Iraqi militias have stated that if the USA engages in "any hostile actions," US bases will be attacked.

The UN Secretary-General has condemned the acts of "escalating the conflict in the Middle East" without mentioning Iran.

US Secretary of State Blinken called Iran's missile attack on Israel "unacceptable," and stated that the whole world should condemn it.

Biden, along with Vice President Harris and their national security team, held an emergency meeting to discuss Iran's attack.

Pentagon spokesperson Pat Ryder told reporters that US Navy destroyers in the Middle East launched about a dozen interceptors against the incoming Iranian missiles, but refused to disclose if the US will engage in kinetic strikes against Iran in the future.

The USA is ready to defend Israel, Biden has ordered military assets to counter any further cross-border attacks against Israel.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre wrote in a post on the social media site X, "The President has instructed the US military to help Israel defend against Iran's attacks and shoot down missiles targeting Israel; they are also reviewing preparations to protect American personnel in the region."

Since assassinating Nasrallah from Israel and intensifying the bombing operations in Lebanon, the usa has been deploying additional troops, with around 40,000 soldiers in the region.
