The Vice Presidential candidate debate will be held on October 1 at 9:00 Eastern Time (October 2 at 9:00 Beijing Time), organized by the American Broadcasting Corporation (CBS).

Compared to the presidential candidate debate held last month, the biggest difference in this Vice Presidential candidate debate is the cancellation of the 'mute' rule - the microphones of the two candidates will not be muted when their opponent is speaking.

In the past, Vice Presidential debates have often been seen as decorative and largely ignored. However, the verbal battles between Walz and Vance have attracted great attention, and voters may be more interested in watching their debate on Tuesday.

60-year-old Walz is a liberal governor and a former high school teacher. 40-year-old Vance is a bestselling author and a conservative radical senator.

Both are white candidates from the Midwest of the United States, both claim to understand the real needs of the heartland of America, but they have serious policy differences.

Walz describes his Republican opponent Vance as eccentric, the latter came under criticism for once mocking Harris and some other Democrats as 'a group of childless cat ladies, their lives are miserable'.

In a 90-minute debate held on Wednesday, they will try to strengthen the limited impression of themselves on the American people so far, while defending their respective party's presidential candidates, Trump and Harris. Trump and Harris are expected to watch the debate.

Waltz is expected to seize on Vance's 'cat lady without children' remarks, as well as spread rumors of 'Haitian immigrants eating pets of Springfield residents in Ohio' to attack him, while aiming to focus the conversation on Harris' agenda.

Vance may attack the Biden-Harris administration's immigration and economic policies, as well as the way Waltz handled the Minneapolis riots following the death of African American George Floyd at the hands of white police in 2020. In addition, Vance may also question Waltz's military service. Republicans have long accused Waltz of exaggerating his rank in the National Guard.

Although Vance wrote a popular memoir 'Hillbilly Elegy' in 2016, a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll shows that a majority (51%) of registered voters in the USA have a negative view of him, while only 39% of voters have a positive view of him.

In contrast, Waltz is more popular among voters. The poll shows that 44% of registered voters have a positive view of Waltz, while 43% of voters have a negative view of him.

Analysts: Will not influence the election results

On September 10, Harris was widely regarded as the winner in the only debate with Trump. It is estimated that 67 million people watched that debate.

However, the contest between Trump and Harris has hardly altered the course of this closely fought election. While Harris is slightly ahead in national voter polls, most polls show that in the seven battleground states that will decide the November election results, the support for both candidates is neck and neck.

Political analysts say that vice presidential debates may be intense, but usually do not sway election results.

Looking back at the last vice-presidential debate (Harris vs Pence), there were hardly any highlights to discuss. A fly landed on Pence's white hair for a full 2 minutes, sparking lively discussions online and becoming a major talking point of the debate.

"I can't think of anyone among them who has really made a difference in the election." said Thomas Alan Schwartz, a presidential historian at Vanderbilt University.

However, with no further presidential candidate debates scheduled, this vice presidential matchup will also give both individuals the opportunity to deliver persuasive closing arguments on behalf of their campaign teams, as early voting across the USA is intensifying.
