Possible Bearish Signals With Applied Materials Insiders Disposing Stock

Simply Wall St ·  Oct 1 19:08

In the last year, many Applied Materials, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMAT) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Applied Materials

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the President, Gary Dickerson, sold US$99m worth of shares at a price of US$247 per share. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (US$202). So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price.

In the last year Applied Materials insiders didn't buy any company stock. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. By clicking on the graph below, you can see the precise details of each insider transaction!

Insider Ownership

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It's great to see that Applied Materials insiders own 0.3% of the company, worth about US$503m. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Applied Materials Insiders?

There haven't been any insider transactions in the last three months -- that doesn't mean much. While we feel good about high insider ownership of Applied Materials, we can't say the same about the selling of shares.
