Ricoh supports JCLP's "#1.5 Degree Campaign".

RICOH COMPANY ·  Sep 30 23:00

Ricoh Co., Ltd. would like to announce that it has agreed to participate in the '#1.5 Degrees' campaign organized by the Japan Climate Leaders' Partnership (JCLP).

Ricoh has been promoting 'environmental management' aiming for the simultaneous realization of environmental conservation and profit creation since 1998, joined JCLP as a founding member in 2009, declared participation in RE100, the first Japanese company to do so in 2017, and has been continuously engaged in sustainability activities for about 30 years. In order to further support efforts by society as a whole to address the worsening issue of climate change, we have come to this agreement.

'#1.5 Degrees' campaign is...

This year, intense heat struck various parts of Japan again. Research teams such as the Japan Meteorological Agency have mentioned that 'the extreme heat this summer would have been almost impossible without global warming.' Additionally, a research team in the UK has announced that the probability of typhoons like the severe Typhoon No. 10 hitting Japan has increased by more than 20% due to climate change.

Climate change threatens our health and livelihoods with increasing heatstroke cases, adverse effects on crops, and damage to living infrastructure. Scientists warn that if the situation worsens and the world's average temperature rises above '1.5 degrees' in the long term compared to pre-Industrial Revolution levels, there could be an increase in deaths due to health effects and a higher risk of a global food crisis.

JCLP is seeking greenhouse gas emission reduction targets aligned with '#1.5 Degrees'. In the future, JCLP will use newspaper advertisements and social media to send out the message of '#1.5 Degrees' along with people concerned about further impacts of global warming such as local characters, healthcare professionals, meteorologists, climate scientists, athletes, etc., encouraging individuals to raise their voices in demanding the '1.5-degree goal,' and supporting the government's efforts to establish reduction targets aligned with the international agreement of the '1.5-degree goal.'

Climate change is also a matter of great concern for Ricoh.

We have established a system where 7,400 sales representatives and 4,400 maintenance personnel can visit customers across the country to support work style reform for approximately 1 million nationwide businesses and maintain the stable operation of office equipment and IT systems. In recent years, severe heat, heavy rain, and weather disasters have had a significant impact on the health and safety of Ricoh Group employees working nationwide, as well as on customers working in offices, construction, medical care, education, etc., at the site. We will continue to support corporate climate change measures by not only decarbonizing our own company, but also supporting our customers' decarbonization and work style transformation.

"Supporting customers' decarbonization and work, that's why 1.5 degrees"
