The US stock market rose. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed the trading session at 42,330.15, up 17.15 points, while the Nasdaq ended at 18,189.17, up 69.58 points.
Ahead of Federal Reserve Chair Powell's speech, cautious sentiment strengthened, leading to mixed trading after the opening bell. The September Chicago Purchasing Managers Index unexpectedly improved, leading to predominant buying, but a slight suggestion of a rate cut by Chair Powell led to a temporary sharp turn to selling due to disappointment. While the Nasdaq showed aversion to rising long-term interest rates, the uptrend in Apple's mobile devices provided support, pushing the market back into positive territory towards the end. At the end of the month, amid optimistic views on the economy and expectations of a soft landing due to Chair Powell's positive outlook, buying sentiment prevailed, resulting in a late-day rise in the Dow to set new all-time highs for consecutive days. In terms of sectors, technology hardware and equipment saw increases, while materials experienced declines.
CVS Health, managing drug stores, received favorable reports of a meeting with outspoken investor Glenview Capital Management regarding business improvement measures, resulting in an increase. Apple, in the mobile device sector, was bought up as analysts took an optimistic view of improving demand trends based on the time from the initial orders to delivery of the new 'Pro' model of the iPhone, which was initially showing signs of weak demand.
Carnival, operating cruise ships, fell due to a lower-than-expected outlook for the fourth quarter. Satellite communications infrastructure company, SATS, under the EchoStar umbrella, declined as it agreed to sell its subsidiary, Dish Network, to DIRECTV.
Chair Powell indicated that if economic indicators align as expected, the total rate cut by the year-end would likely be 0.5%.
