With EPS Growth And More, Brookfield Infrastructure (NYSE:BIPC) Makes An Interesting Case

Simply Wall St ·  Oct 1 02:16

It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.

In contrast to all that, many investors prefer to focus on companies like Brookfield Infrastructure (NYSE:BIPC), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

How Fast Is Brookfield Infrastructure Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

In business, profits are a key measure of success; and share prices tend to reflect earnings per share (EPS) performance. So a growing EPS generally brings attention to a company in the eyes of prospective investors. It's an outstanding feat for Brookfield Infrastructure to have grown EPS from US$1.94 to US$8.42 in just one year. While it's difficult to sustain growth at that level, it bodes well for the company's outlook for the future. This could point to the business hitting a point of inflection.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. On the revenue front, Brookfield Infrastructure has done well over the past year, growing revenue by 65% to US$3.3b but EBIT margin figures were less stellar, seeing a decline over the last 12 months. If EBIT margins are able to stay balanced and this revenue growth continues, then we should see brighter days ahead.

While profitability drives the upside, prudent investors always check the balance sheet, too.

Are Brookfield Infrastructure Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Investors are always searching for a vote of confidence in the companies they hold and insider buying is one of the key indicators for optimism on the market. Because often, the purchase of stock is a sign that the buyer views it as undervalued. However, small purchases are not always indicative of conviction, and insiders don't always get it right.

We note that Brookfield Infrastructure insiders spent US$142k on stock, over the last year; in contrast, we didn't see any selling. That's nice to see, because it suggests insiders are optimistic. We also note that it was the Independent Director, Rajeev Vasudeva, who made the biggest single acquisition, paying US$89k for shares at about US$35.65 each.

Recent insider purchases of Brookfield Infrastructure stock is not the only way management has kept the interests of the general public shareholders in mind. To be specific, the CEO is paid modestly when compared to company peers of the same size. For companies with market capitalisations between US$4.0b and US$12b, like Brookfield Infrastructure, the median CEO pay is around US$8.1m.

Brookfield Infrastructure offered total compensation worth US$4.1m to its CEO in the year to December 2023. That seems pretty reasonable, especially given it's below the median for similar sized companies. While the level of CEO compensation shouldn't be the biggest factor in how the company is viewed, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.

Is Brookfield Infrastructure Worth Keeping An Eye On?

Brookfield Infrastructure's earnings per share have been soaring, with growth rates sky high. Not to mention the company's insiders have been adding to their portfolios and the CEO's remuneration policy looks to have had shareholders in mind seeing as it's quite modest for the company size. The strong EPS growth suggests Brookfield Infrastructure may be at an inflection point. If these have piqued your interest, then this stock surely warrants a spot on your watchlist.
