Introducing diapers using 'recycled pulp' at Unicharm

Unicharm Corporation (Representative Director and President Executive Officer: Takahara Goukyu) will introduce 'Mamy Poko Pants RefF (Leaf)' using 'recycled pulp' extracted from used paper pants (diapers) in all 56 public kindergartens in Yokohama City adopting the 'empty-handed arrival' developed in collaboration with BABY JOB Corporation from October 1, 2024. It will be the first attempt in Japan to introduce 'Mamy Poko Pants RefF (Leaf)' to public kindergartens in cooperation with local governments.

※'Empty-handed arrival' is a flat-rate service for childcare facilities that reduces the burden on both parents and childcare workers, such as eliminating the preparation of paper diapers and wipes, the burden of carrying bulky items when arriving at the facility, and the management of paper diapers and wipes by childcare workers.

Background of the collaboration between 'RefF (Leaf)' and Yokohama City

Since 2015, our company has been working on the horizontal recycling of used paper pants (diapers) and has successfully developed a unique sterilization technology using ozone. This technology produces 'regenerated pulp' that is hygienic and safe, with the same quality as unused pulp. In addition, taking advantage of this technology, we have introduced 'hands-free nursery drop-off' at childcare facilities that use the 'regenerated pulp' extracted from used paper pants to provide nursery-exclusive paper diapers called 'Mamypoko Pants RefF (Leaf)' aiming to reduce the burden on parents.

Therefore, as part of the 'Nimotsu Karugaru Nursery' project in Yokohama City, the introduction of 'Mamypoko Pants RefF (Leaf)' was decided in all public nursery schools in the city, as it was evaluated for 'reducing the burden on parents.'

In Yokohama City, as an initiative to reduce the burden of carrying luggage when children enter nursery schools, the subscription service for paper diapers 'hands-free nursery drop-off' has been introduced at municipal nurseries since June 2021. By introducing the subscription-only product 'Mamypoko Pants RefF (Leaf)' this time, we hope to further reduce the burden on childcare workers and advance environmentally friendly initiatives.

'RefF (Leaf)'

It is an acronym for 'Recycle for the Future' and is the brand name for Uni-Charm's horizontal recycling. Our company is working on recycling towards 'a future where used paper pants (diapers) are not thrown away' to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society.
