Option Care Health, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:OPCH) Business Is Trailing The Market But Its Shares Aren't

Simply Wall St ·  Sep 27 20:49

Option Care Health, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:OPCH) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 25.2x might make it look like a sell right now compared to the market in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 18x and even P/E's below 10x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/E.

Option Care Health has been struggling lately as its earnings have declined faster than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think the company will turn things around completely and accelerate past most others in the market. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

NasdaqGS:OPCH Price to Earnings Ratio vs Industry September 27th 2024
Keen to find out how analysts think Option Care Health's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/E?

Option Care Health's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the market.

If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 9.0%. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 365% overall rise in EPS, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the earnings growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the nine analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 9.1% each year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 10% per annum, which is not materially different.

In light of this, it's curious that Option Care Health's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Although, additional gains will be difficult to achieve as this level of earnings growth is likely to weigh down the share price eventually.

The Bottom Line On Option Care Health's P/E

Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our examination of Option Care Health's analyst forecasts revealed that its market-matching earnings outlook isn't impacting its high P/E as much as we would have predicted. When we see an average earnings outlook with market-like growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. Unless these conditions improve, it's challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
