The US stock market extended gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 42,208.22, up 83.57 points, while the Nasdaq ended trading at 18,074.52, up 100.25 points.
Following expectations of additional interest rate cuts within the year and stimulus measures in China, the global economic outlook improved, leading to an initial rise. However, optimism towards the economy retreated after the September consumer confidence index fell below estimates, resulting in a shift to selling. Dow saw some profit-taking near record highs, causing a sluggish performance. Nasdaq remained resilient on strong buying interest in artificial intelligence (AI) sector, particularly semiconductor companies like NVIDIA (NVDA), pushing the market higher. Dow recovered into positive territory towards the end of the session, setting new all-time highs for consecutive days. Among the sectors, semiconductor and semiconductor equipment rose, while utilities industry declined.
Heavy equipment maker Caterpillar (CAT) rose on expectations of increased sales following stimulus measures in China. Cosmetic manufacturer Estee Lauder (EL) also saw an increase driven by expectations of demand recovery in China. Casino operator Las Vegas Sands (LVS) announced a luxury hotel construction project in Macau in collaboration with hotel chain operator Marriott International (MAR), leading to a rise. NVIDIA (NVDA) in the semiconductor sector saw buying interest as planned share sales by the CEO were completed, eliminating selling pressure.
Low-cost airline Southwest (LUV) rose after activist investor Elliott Management signaled intentions to convene a special shareholder meeting next week to call for board reforms, well-received by investors. Credit card company Visa (V) declined after the Department of Justice sued the company for antitrust violations related to debit card payments. Alaska Air (ALK) fell as credit rating agency Moody's downgraded its credit rating. Steel company United States Steel (X) traded weakly after Republican presidential candidate Trump reaffirmed his stance to block a takeover by Japan's Nippon Steel.
Residential construction company KB Homes (KBH) reported quarterly earnings below expectations after trading hours, leading to selling in extended hours trading.
