Simply Wall St ·  Sep 22 20:07

It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.

If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in IQVIA Holdings (NYSE:IQV). While this doesn't necessarily speak to whether it's undervalued, the profitability of the business is enough to warrant some appreciation - especially if its growing.

IQVIA Holdings' Earnings Per Share Are Growing

The market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term, so you'd expect share price to follow earnings per share (EPS) outcomes eventually. So it makes sense that experienced investors pay close attention to company EPS when undertaking investment research. Shareholders will be happy to know that IQVIA Holdings' EPS has grown 35% each year, compound, over three years. As a general rule, we'd say that if a company can keep up that sort of growth, shareholders will be beaming.

Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. While we note IQVIA Holdings achieved similar EBIT margins to last year, revenue grew by a solid 3.2% to US$15b. That's progress.

Are IQVIA Holdings Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$44b company like IQVIA Holdings. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Notably, they have an enviable stake in the company, worth US$358m. While that is a lot of skin in the game, we note this holding only totals to 0.8% of the business, which is a result of the company being so large. This still shows shareholders there is a degree of alignment between management and themselves.
