From what we can see, insiders were net buyers in The GEO Group, Inc.'s (NYSE:GEO ) during the past 12 months. That is, insiders acquired the stock in greater numbers than they sold it.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.
The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At GEO Group
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Founder & Executive Chairman of the Board George Zoley for US$3.1m worth of shares, at about US$12.34 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, at around the current price, which is US$12.37. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. While we always like to see insider buying, it's less meaningful if the purchases were made at much lower prices, as the opportunity they saw may have passed. In this case we're pleased to report that the insider bought shares at close to current prices. The only individual insider to buy over the last year was George Zoley.
George Zoley purchased 300.00k shares over the year. The average price per share was US$12.32. Insider Ownership Of GEO Group
Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It appears that GEO Group insiders own 3.8% of the company, worth about US$64m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
