On September 20th, the Abu Dhabi-based AI company G42 Group announced on its official website that it is collaborating with the American chip giant Nvidia to create a climate technology laboratory. This is also the first collaboration between the two companies.

The press release stated that the focus of the collaboration is to develop AI solutions that can greatly improve global weather forecast accuracy. The research will be based on Nvidia's open platform 'Earth-2', which can accelerate climate and weather prediction through interactive AI-enhanced high-resolution simulations.

According to Nvidia's official website, climate scientists can access model-based generative AI models through Earth-2's AI services, which can sample distributions thousands of times to generate a large-scale collection of practical high-resolution predictions.

In recent years, Nvidia has been promoting its 'digital twin' concept, which is creating virtual versions of real-world objects in the virtual world. Nvidia calls it 'Omniverse', and Earth-2 is the digital twin of the Earth.

G42 stated that the newly built climate technology laboratory in Abu Dhabi will become a research and development center, promoting the two companies' commitment to sustainable development of the environment. The facility will 'utilize over 100PB of geophysical data assets to create customized climate and weather solutions.'

Peng Xiao, CEO of G42 Group, wrote, 'The collaboration with Nvidia demonstrates our commitment to applying AI in innovative ways and addressing critical global challenges. Establishing the Earth-2 climate technology laboratory in Abu Dhabi allows us to leverage our unique capabilities and insights to promote a sustainable future for the world.'

Nvidia's founder and CEO Huang Renxun also stated in the press release, 'Our collaboration with G42 marks a crucial step forward in our use of AI to understand and predict climate phenomena with unprecedented accuracy. The Earth-2 Climate Technology Laboratory will leverage advanced computing and AI technologies to drive environmental solutions for the benefit of millions of people worldwide.'

Analysts believe that the partnership between G42 and Nvidia will help strengthen the UAE's position as a leading AI superpower in the Middle East. Next week, the UAE's president will make an official visit to the United States, during which he will meet with President Biden and Vice President Harris.

A senior UAE official said that one of his main objectives of this trip is to discuss cooperation in the field of technology, including artificial intelligence.

Earlier this year, G42 reached an agreement with Microsoft and received a $1.5 billion investment. G42 will collaborate with Microsoft to establish two centers in Abu Dhabi for responsible AI projects. Additionally, OpenAI, which is seeking to expand its business in the Gulf region, has also established a partnership with G42.
