Insiders At Winnebago Industries Sold US$1.6m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness

Simply Wall St ·  Sep 20 00:17

The fact that multiple Winnebago Industries, Inc. (NYSE:WGO) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Winnebago Industries

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Senior Vice President of Business Development, Ashis Bhattacharya, for US$701k worth of shares, at about US$61.48 per share. So we know that an insider sold shares at around the present share price of US$57.99. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. Given that the sale took place at around current prices, it makes us a little cautious but is hardly a major concern.

Winnebago Industries Insiders Are Selling The Stock

The last quarter saw substantial insider selling of Winnebago Industries shares. Specifically, Senior VP of Corporate Responsibility Stacy Bogart ditched US$193k worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. Overall this makes us a bit cautious, but it's not the be all and end all.

Insider Ownership

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It appears that Winnebago Industries insiders own 3.2% of the company, worth about US$55m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Winnebago Industries Insiders?

An insider hasn't bought Winnebago Industries stock in the last three months, but there was some selling. And there weren't any purchases to give us comfort, over the last year. Insiders own shares, but we're still pretty cautious, given the history of sales. We'd practice some caution before buying! So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing.
