While not a mind-blowing move, it is good to see that the NetScout Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:NTCT) share price has gained 12% in the last three months. But in truth the last year hasn't been good for the share price. In fact, the price has declined 27% in a year, falling short of the returns you could get by investing in an index fund.

While the last year has been tough for NetScout Systems shareholders, this past week has shown signs of promise. So let's look at the longer term fundamentals and see if they've been the driver of the negative returns.

During the last year NetScout Systems saw its earnings per share drop below zero. Some investors no doubt dumped the stock as a result. Of course, if the company can turn the situation around, investors will likely profit.
