Google (GOOGL.US) won the 1.5 billion euro antitrust case in advertising.
According to the Futu app, Google (GOOGL.US) won the 1.5 billion euro (1.7 billion US dollars) antitrust case in advertising, which partially made up for the company's devastating defeat in another case of abuse of monopoly power last week.
The judges of the General Court of the European Union supported Google's challenge to the fine imposed in 2019, stating that the regulatory agency made mistakes in the investigation.
The European Commission has accused Google, as a dominant online advertising broker, of illegally blocking competitors such as Yahoo and Microsoft from placing ads on third-party websites. Google was hence fined 1.5 billion euros. Wednesday's ruling can still be appealed to the European Court of Justice.
This decision comes after two victories for Margrethe Vestager, the head of competition affairs in the European Union. Last week, both Apple (AAPL.US) and Google lost in the two largest competition cases in EU history. Apple failed in its 13 billion euro (14.4 billion US dollars) Irish tax case demanded by the EU, while Google faced a 2.4 billion euro fine for abusing its market power in search.
In addition, Meta Platforms (META.US) faces a massive fine from the European Union for alleged monopoly in the classified advertising market. The EU is expected to make a decision as early as next month, which will be one of the final investigations supervised by departing Vestager.
