Bitcoin has rapidly become one of the most popular means of value storage globally. Currently, governments around the world hold billions of dollars' worth of bitcoin and other cryptos, underscoring its role as a modern economic force.
The chart shows that Bhutan has emerged as one of the wealthy countries holding cryptocurrency, currently holding over 0.77 billion dollars' worth of bitcoin.
The country's hold positions are more than double that of El Salvador, a bitcoin-supporting country, with El Salvador holding around $0.35 billion in bitcoin.
In addition, it holds 656.03 ether (ETH), worth $1.52 million. For a country with a population of less than 1 million, this is an exceptionally large investment portfolio. However, it appears that BitDeer is leading a massive bitcoin mining business.
BitDeer, based in Singapore, quietly expanded its mining facilities in cooperation with the Bhutanese government in 2023 and plans to reach a capacity of 600 trillion watts by 2025.
Arkham pointed out, "Unlike most governments, Bhutan's bitcoin does not come from the seizure of law enforcement assets, but from the bitcoin mining business, which has seen a sharp increase since early 2023."
According to data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Bhutan's gross domestic product (GDP) is estimated at $3.11 billion, on par with countries like Andorra, Timor-Leste, and Belize. This means that bitcoin accounts for slightly less than 1/3 of Bhutan's GDP.
The country's other hold assets include The Sandbox (SAND), Polygon (MATIC), Binance Coin (BNB), BIM (BIM), and iNFTspace (INS).
