According to a new survey, 46% of Republicans surveyed said they would not accept the legitimacy of the election results if the Democratic candidate wins; 14% of Republicans said they would take action to overturn the election results if the Democratic candidate wins.
Four years ago, former President Trump, who did not recognize his defeat to the current President Biden in the election, had his supporters storm the Capitol, attempting to overthrow the election results of 2020 and causing a shocking "Capitol Hill riot" event that reverberated around the world.
Now, as the 2024 US presidential election approaches, the Republican presidential candidate Trump and the Democratic presidential candidate Harris will face off in the ultimate showdown. With the release of a public opinion poll, people can't help but worry that similar riots may occur again in the US.
According to a new survey, 46% of Republicans surveyed said they would not accept the legitimacy of the election results if the Democratic candidate wins. 14% of Republicans said they would take action to overturn the election results if the Democratic candidate wins.
In contrast, Democrats tend to react more calmly to unfavorable election results.
27% of Democrats surveyed said they would not accept the legitimacy of the election results if the Republican candidate wins. 11% of Democrats said they would take action to overturn the election results if the Republican candidate wins.
This survey comes from the World Justice Project, an independent multidisciplinary organization dedicated to advancing the rule of law around the world. The survey interviewed 1,046 Americans nationwide to predict their reactions to the results of the 2024 presidential election. The survey was conducted in June and the results were released this Monday.
The survey results show that even after the 2020 election, the general public still lacks trust in the electoral process and ultimately will question the results of the November election. Only one-third of Republicans and two-thirds of Democrats believe that US election officials are trustworthy.
USA President Biden warned earlier last month that if Trump loses the presidential election, he has “no confidence” in a peaceful transfer of power in January next year.
“The lack of trust in the electoral process should serve as a warning for the November election,” said Elizabeth Anderson, Executive Director of the World Justice Project. “Our government officials, media, community leaders, and informed citizens from all walks of life must work harder than ever to build trust in the fairness of the American elections and the commitment to the rule of law.”
It is worth noting that despite a significant proportion of American citizens lacking trust in the electoral process, over 96% of both Republicans and Democrats agree on the critical importance of the rule of law for the country's future.
