According to Reuters on September 18, the Canadian union Unifor has extended the final deadline for contract negotiations with General Motors, avoiding a strike at the Ingersoll, Ontario plant that produces electric autos and batteries. Unifor and General Motors began contract negotiations last week. The local Unifor chapter had previously indicated that if an agreement was not reached, 97% of its over 1300 members would support a strike at the CAMI plant. The union has not provided a new final deadline and has also refused to disclose any further information beyond the statement. Unifor National President Lana Payne stated in a declaration that the negotiating committee continues to make progress at the negotiating table, and as long as this remains the case, negotiations will continue.
