Japanese stocks of American Depositary Receipt (ADR), converted at a rate of 142.34 yen per dollar compared to the Tokyo Stock Exchange, including Japan Post Holdings <6178>, Honda Motor <7267>, Toyota Motor <7203>, Orient Land <4661>, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group <8306>, Mizuho Financial Group <8411>, and Sumitomo Corporation <8053> rose, resulting in overall gains. The Chicago Nikkei 225 futures settlement price closed at 36,410 yen, 400 yen higher than the Osaka daytime session.

The U.S. stock market was mixed. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 41,606.18, down 15.90 points, while the Nasdaq closed at 17,628.06, up 35.93 points. The market initially rose on expectations of a rate cut ahead of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, but then struggled to gain momentum due to caution and adjustments leading up to the FOMC. The Dow experienced profit-taking selling as it neared its all-time high, resulting in a downturn. The Nasdaq held steady supported by a positive outlook on interest rates, but closed with mixed results.

In the New York foreign exchange market on the 17th, the dollar-yen rate rose from 140.55 yen to 142.47 yen and closed at 142.33 yen. The strengthening of the dollar was driven by better-than-expected retail sales growth and an improvement in industrial production in August, as well as positive results for corporate inventories and the housing market index, leading to expectations of rising long-term interest rates. The auction of 20-year bonds also performed poorly, further supporting dollar buying. The euro-dollar rate fell from 1.1144 dollars to 1.1111 dollars and closed at 1.1116 dollars, as the German September ZEW economic sentiment index unexpectedly declined, increasing expectations of additional rate cuts by the European Central Bank (ECB) and strengthening selling pressure on the euro.

NYMEX crude oil futures for October continued to rise (closing price: 71.19, up 1.10).
