Ford To Roll Out Limited Edition Street Legal Race Car Variant Of Mustang As Early As This Year

Benzinga ·  Sep 17 19:26

Dearborn-based Ford Motor Co (NYSE:F) is looking to start production of a high-performance race car variant of the Mustang for street use as early as this year.

What Happened: The 2025 Ford Mustang GTD will have up to 815 horsepower and a top speed of 202 mph. The street-legal car is inspired by the Mustang GT3 race car.

The vehicle is expected to be available either late 2024 or early next year. The vehicle, however, will be produced in very low volume and is estimated to start at over $300,000.

"We've been laser focused since day 1 to make Mustang GTD the first-ever supercar with world-class performance and the soul of a Mustang," said Mustang GTD Chief Program Engineer Greg Goodall in a statement. "GTD's heart is its supercharged 5.2-liter V8, packing more horsepower per liter than the Porsche 911 GT3 RS."

Why It Matters: Ford's Mustang has marked its 60th year in 2024. The vehicle made its world debut on Apr. 17, 1964, at the New York World's Fair and has since undergone several design changes and yet retained its popularity.

In the first half of 2024, Ford sold 27,444 Mustang vehicles, marking an increase of 7.7% from last year. The company also sold 22,234 units of the Mustang Mach-E, a crossover electric SUV part of Ford's longest-produced car nameplate.
