At the close of trading on the 17th, the number of rising stocks among the Nikkei average constituent stocks was 86, the number of declining stocks was 135, and the number of unchanged stocks was 4.
In the US stock market on the 16th, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 41,622.08, up 228.30 points (+0.55%), the Nasdaq closed at 17,592.13, down 91.85 points (-0.52%), and the S&P 500 closed at 5,633.09, up 7.07 points (+0.13%). With the wait for the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting this week, there was caution in trading, and the market fluctuated after the opening. The Dow rose due to buying supported by the September NY Fed's manufacturing economic index expanding for the first time in about a year and expectations of a soft landing, reaching a record high. On the other hand, the Nasdaq was weighed down by the decline in Apple's mobile devices and traded weakly throughout the day, closing mixed.
Amid mixed performances in the US stock market, the Tokyo market started with a slight buying trend after the end of the holidays, following a pause in the appreciation of the yen. The Nikkei average opened slightly higher compared to the previous trading day, but the strengthened yen, with the exchange rate above 140.30 yen to the dollar, dampened sentiment, causing main stocks such as exporting companies to decline. Semiconductor stocks were weak, influenced by the decline in US high-tech stocks, and there were moments when the Nikkei average fell below 36,000 yen. After the selling pressure subsided, the market stabilized at a lower level, but declines in financial stocks due to the decrease in interest rates weighed on the market, and the Nikkei average closed at around 36,200 yen.
The closing price of the Nikkei average on the previous trading day was 36,203.22 yen, down 378.54 yen (-1.03%).
The trading volume on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market was 1.807 billion 458 million shares. The trading value was 4 trillion 202.8 billion yen. In terms of industry, insurance, banking, securities and commodity futures trading, electric appliances, and transportation equipment declined, while marine transportation, fisheries and forestry, land transportation, air transportation, and food rose. The number of rising stocks on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market is 58%, while the number of declining stocks is 38%.
