ADR (American Depositary Receipt) shares of Japanese stocks, converted at an exchange rate of 140.62 yen per dollar compared to the Tokyo Stock Exchange, Japan Post <6178>, Mizuho FG <8411>, Mitsubishi UFJ FG <8306>, Terumo <4543>, Sumitomo Mitsui FG <8316>, Orix <8591>, Toyota Motor <7203>, etc. rose, while Yucho Bank <7182>, Fanuc <6954>, Seven & I Holdings <3382>, Disco <6146>, Renesas <6723>, Murata Manufacturing <6981>, Bridgestone <5108>, etc. fell, with mixed performance overall. The settlement price of the Chicago Nikkei 225 futures was 36,435 yen, 145 yen higher than the Osaka daytime comparison.

The U.S. stock market had mixed performance. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 41,622.08, up 228.30 points, while the Nasdaq closed at 17,592.13, down 91.85 points. With the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting scheduled for this week, market participants adopted a cautious stance and the market was mixed after the opening. The Dow rose due to buying supported by expectations of a soft landing as the September NY Fed Manufacturing Index expanded into positive territory for the first time in about a year, reaching a record high. On the other hand, the Nasdaq remained weak throughout the day due to the decline in Apple (AAPL) shares and closed with mixed performance.

In the foreign exchange market in New York on the 16th, the dollar-yen rate rose from 139.74 yen to 140.91 yen, closing at 140.62 yen. After the Federal Reserve Board (FRB) was seen as taking aggressive interest rate cuts at the September FOMC meeting, which accelerated selling of the dollar, the September NY Fed Manufacturing Index unexpectedly improved into positive territory, reaching almost a year-high, and led to buying back of the dollar. The euro-dollar rate remained in a narrow range between 1.1116 dollars and 1.1138 dollars and closed at 1.1131 dollars. Philip Lane, Chief Economist of the European Central Bank (ECB), stated that a gradual approach is appropriate for easing measures, and Peter Kažimír, Governor of the Slovak Central Bank, stated that it is almost certain that the ECB will wait for additional interest rate cuts until December, which led to more buying of the euro.
