Chewy, Inc. (NYSE:CHWY) Stock Rockets 27% As Investors Are Less Pessimistic Than Expected

Simply Wall St ·  Sep 12 18:16

Chewy, Inc. (NYSE:CHWY) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 27% share price jump in the last month. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 41%.

After such a large jump in price, when almost half of the companies in the United States' Specialty Retail industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 0.3x, you may consider Chewy as a stock probably not worth researching with its 1.1x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

NYSE:CHWY Price to Sales Ratio vs Industry September 12th 2024

How Has Chewy Performed Recently?

There hasn't been much to differentiate Chewy's and the industry's revenue growth lately. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to improve, justifying the currently elevated P/S. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Chewy would need to produce impressive growth in excess of the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 4.4%. This was backed up an excellent period prior to see revenue up by 39% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 6.7% per annum as estimated by the analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 5.6% per year, which is not materially different.

In light of this, it's curious that Chewy's P/S sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.

What Does Chewy's P/S Mean For Investors?

The large bounce in Chewy's shares has lifted the company's P/S handsomely. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Analysts are forecasting Chewy's revenues to only grow on par with the rest of the industry, which has lead to the high P/S ratio being unexpected. The fact that the revenue figures aren't setting the world alight has us doubtful that the company's elevated P/S can be sustainable for the long term. Unless the company can jump ahead of the rest of the industry in the short-term, it'll be a challenge to maintain the share price at current levels.
