In addition, according to the announcement by the Shanghai Stock Exchange, on September 6, 2024, trading on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange was suspended due to the typhoon. According to the Implementation Measures for Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect Business of the Shanghai Stock Exchange, Hong Kong Stock Connect trading was suspended. The clearing and settlement of Hong Kong Stock Connect trades will be carried out according to the arrangements of China Securities Depository and Clearing Corporation Limited.

What are the trading rules for Hong Kong stocks in inclement weather?

When Typhoon Signal No. 8 or Storm Signal is in effect, it will have a significant impact on Hong Kong, such as school suspensions, stock market closures, etc. According to the documents disclosed by HKEX (Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited):

  • If Typhoon Signal No. 8 is lifted before 7 am, the Hong Kong Stock Exchange will continue trading as usual.

  • If the signal is lifted between 7 am and 9 am, the pre-market session will be canceled, and the morning trading session will resume 2 hours after the signal is lifted, starting at the hour or half-hour.

  • If the signal is lifted after 9 am and before 11 am, the pre-market session and morning trading session will be canceled, and the afternoon trading session will start as usual at 1 pm.

  • If lifted after 11:30 am to 11:30 am, the pre-market session and morning trading session will be cancelled, and the afternoon trading session will start at 1:30 pm.

  • If lifted after 11:30 am to 12:00 pm, the pre-market session and morning trading session will be cancelled, and the afternoon trading session will start at 2:00 pm.

  • If lifted after 12:00 pm, all-day trading will be suspended.

When will the arrangement for not suspending the market in bad weather be implemented?

Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam announced on June 18 before the executive meeting that the Hong Kong Stock Exchange will implement new arrangements from September 23 this year, and the securities market will not be suspended in bad weather to maintain its operation.

Carrie Lam said that under the new arrangement, investors can continue to buy and sell Hong Kong stocks and derivatives products as usual during the period of typhoon signal number 8 or above or black rainstorm warning, and they can also buy and sell mainland A-shares through the Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect.
