FX168 Financial News (Asia Pacific) reported that China's first phenomenon-level 3A game "Black Myth: Wukong" has exploded in popularity, with sales exceeding 17.4 million copies and a peak of over 1.3 million active players online in the past 24 hours. The first early investor of the game developer Game Science, Daniel Wu Dan, recently mentioned Web3 games in a rare interview, emphasizing that he would not invest in or support entrepreneurs who switch to developing Web3 games.

Daniel Wu Dan is well-known in the Chinese gaming industry. He was once praised by Liu Weiyu, the president and director of miHoYo, the developer of Genshin Impact, as "the strongest investor in the Chinese gaming industry in the past five years, bar none".

It is reported that Wu Dan currently serves as the CEO of Hero Entertainment. As early as 2017, when he was the president of Hero Games, he decided to invest 60 million RMB in Game Science, holding a 20% share. Until Tencent's investment in 2021, Hero Games was his only investor and the largest external shareholder.

With an additional investment of 100 million RMB in the "Black Myth: Wukong" project, Hero Games became the sole co-producer of "Black Myth: Wukong".

During the interview, Wu Dan shared his human-centered investment philosophy and his deep insights into game investment and production. His statement regarding Web3 games caught the attention of the Web3 community, as this heavyweight investor in the Chinese gaming industry declared, "I would not invest in or support entrepreneurs who switch to developing Web3 games."

When asked about the trend of technology combined with games, such as Web3 games and AI games, Wu Dan gave his personal perspective. He explained that games themselves are always the focus, and that many Web3 game entrepreneurs are not passionate about games.

"I think it's always games plus something else. You should focus on the team and not be misled by new directions. I've seen a lot of gaming entrepreneurs in the Web3 space switch to Web3, and I would not invest in those people at all."

He added, "If they don't love games in the first place, how could they possibly create good games? It's a very simple truth."

He also mentioned that he believes game developers should focus on improving their production capabilities in content creation, including both quality and efficiency aspects.

In response to this, he gave an example: 'Many people ask me if we should develop an apple Vision Pro game. I said we don't need to develop a Vision Pro game because our ability to endure hardship and improve ourselves every day is the production capability of content creation. It is both about quality and efficiency.'

'Assuming that Vision Pro really becomes popular, relying on my own quality and efficiency, it will provide the best content. It's not about being early, but about providing good enough content. It's two different logics. Like in the early years, everyone said they wanted to invest in an action game company to overthrow Tencent in the future.'

'No, Tencent will still dominate this market in the end, because its production quality and efficiency are there, it's just that the market has matured.'

He concluded by saying, 'What you need to focus on are the things that big companies cannot do. Either big companies cannot attract talents like those in the second dimension, or they lack the organizational efficiency to do it. In fact, you just need to pay attention to these things.'
