According to media reports cited by sources, $Apple (AAPL.US)$ Apple will completely abandon the use of LCD screens in iPhones, and all iPhones sold from next year onwards will use OLED screens.

Apple first used OLED display on iPhone X in 2017 Since then, Apple has popularized OLED display in mid-to-high-end models, but the iPhone SE series still uses LCD screens.

However, the era of LCD screen iPhones is about to become history. Sources said that Apple has started ordering OLED displays for the new generation iPhone SE from JD.com and LG.

Samsung currently holds about half of the iPhone OLED display market, LG holds about 30%, and JD.com holds about 20%.

Sharp and Japan Display Inc. (JDI) previously provided LCD screens for Apple, and neither company mass-produced OLED displays for smartphones.

This means that after the discontinuation of the old iPhone SE, Sharp and JDI will be excluded from the iPhone supply chain business. About 10 years ago, the two companies had a combined market share of 70% in the iPhone display screen market. Around 2015, JDI and Sharp delivered nearly 200 million LCD screens to the iPhone each year, but by 2023, this number had dropped to around 20 million.

As OLED displays become more popular in iPads and other products, it is expected that Apple will further reduce its procurement of LCD screens.

JDI once had 60% of its revenue dependent on apple, but due to apple's decision to abandon LCD screens, the company found itself in a situation of overcapacity. As of March of this year, JDI has reported net losses for 10 consecutive years.

Although JDI is also developing OLED, it currently only provides small OLED displays for devices such as apple watches. The company is currently focusing on adjusting its business strategy around automobile applications.

Sharp is shrinking its LCD business, closing its factory in Sakai, Osaka in August, which was responsible for producing large LCDs for televisions. Sharp also reduced the capacity of its factory in Kameyama, Mie Prefecture.
