Don't Ignore The Insider Selling In Brown & Brown

Simply Wall St ·  Sep 2 18:26

Some Brown & Brown, Inc. (NYSE:BRO) shareholders may be a little concerned to see that the Chairman of the Board, J. Brown, recently sold a substantial US$14m worth of stock at a price of US$105 per share. However, that sale only accounted for 0.3% of their holding, so arguably it doesn't say much about their conviction.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Brown & Brown

Notably, that recent sale by Chairman of the Board J. Brown was not the only time they sold Brown & Brown shares this year. Earlier in the year, they fetched US$86.05 per share in a -US$20m sale. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$105, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. It is worth noting that this sale was only 0.6% of J. Brown's holding.
