Have Insiders Sold Coastal Financial Shares Recently?

Simply Wall St ·  Aug 30 18:16

We'd be surprised if Coastal Financial Corporation (NASDAQ:CCB) shareholders haven't noticed that the Independent Director, Steven Hovde, recently sold US$186k worth of stock at US$53.15 per share. On the bright side, that sale was only 0.2% of their holding, so we doubt it's very meaningful, on its own.

Coastal Financial Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Executive VP, Joel Edwards, sold US$540k worth of shares at a price of US$44.45 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$53.19, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. This single sale was just 29% of Joel Edwards's stake.

Coastal Financial insiders didn't buy any shares over the last year. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. If you want to know exactly who sold, for how much, and when, simply click on the graph below!

Insider Ownership

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Coastal Financial insiders own about US$133m worth of shares (which is 19% of the company). Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Coastal Financial Insiders?

An insider sold Coastal Financial shares recently, but they didn't buy any. And even if we look at the last year, we didn't see any purchases. It is good to see high insider ownership, but the insider selling leaves us cautious. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
