While U.S. stocks rebounded significantly, the Tokyo market started with a selling bias as the exchange rate fluctuated to the yen's appreciation and dollar depreciation, falling below the 38,000 yen level for the Nikkei average, with export-related stocks such as Toyota Motor <7203> and Honda <7267> falling overall. However, Nitori Holdings <9843> and other yen-benefit stocks were bought, and the Nikkei average recovered the 38,000 yen level in the afternoon session, buoyed by the easing of the yen's strength.
The closing Nikkei average was 38,110.22 yen, down 254.05 yen (-0.66%) compared to the previous trading day. The trading volume on the Tokyo Stock Exchange's Prime Market was 1.3 billion 14.31 million shares, with a trading value of 3 trillion 321.9 billion yen. Among the industries, transportation equipment, banking, rubber products, insurance, and nonferrous metals declined, while pulp and paper, air transportation, real estate, fisheries and forestry, and land transportation rose. Among the stocks listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange's Prime Market, 46% rose in value, while 50% fell.
The top contributors to the decline in the Nikkei average were Tohoku Electric <8035> in the first place, followed by Advantest <6857>, which pushed down the Nikkei average by about 106 yen. Meanwhile, the top decliners among the Nikkei average constituent stocks were Mitsukoshi Isetan <3099> with a 6.44% decrease, followed by Furukawa Electric <5801> with a 5.60% decrease.
On the other hand, the top contributors to the rise in the Nikkei average were First Retailing <9983> in the first place, followed by Nitori Holdings <9843>, which pushed up the Nikkei average by about 79 yen. Meanwhile, the top gainers among the Nikkei average constituent stocks were LINE Yahoo <4689> with a 6.08% increase, followed by Nitori Holdings with a 3.95% increase.
