Qianxin XLab Laboratory disclosed and reconstructed the details behind this DDoS attack: nearly 60 zombie network controllers launched this attack, with attack instructions skyrocketing by 0.02 million times overnight, targeting Steam's global websites, involving 107 Steam server IPs across 13 countries and regions.
XLab Laboratory observed a total of 0.28 million attack instructions targeting the Steam platform in this attack incident. Based on long-term observations, attacks on Steam have been frequent in the past, but attack instructions were usually in double digits. "The direct increase by over 0.02 million times last night, such a high number of attack instructions, has been extremely rare in our industry." Stated by Qianxin XLab Laboratory.
Starting from 6:00 PM on August 24, attackers concentrated their firepower to attack the Singapore node room in Asia and the Perfect World server room of Steam in China. By the morning of the 25th, they switched to the United States server room. In terms of timing, it almost coincided with the local gaming peak period (evenings and nights).
The key attack targets included 107 Steam server IPs in 13 regions such as China, usa, Singapore, Sweden, Germany, Austria, Spain, united kingdom, japan, south korea, Australia, Chile, and the Netherlands.
Qianxin XLab Laboratory stated that, considering the sharp increase in attack instructions, the massive scale of zombie networks, and the fierceness of the attackers in this DDoS attack, it can be almost certain that behind this attack lies a tight organization, meticulous operational plan, and clear attack objectives.
In the field of gaming, DDoS attacks are one of the most common and direct forms of attack. Attackers launch attacks on game servers by controlling a large number of zombie networks, causing server congestion and eventually crashing.
