Fisco Japan ·  Aug 23 14:56

At the closing time on the 23rd, the number of rising stocks of the Nikkei average constituent stocks was 175, the number of falling stocks was 50, and the number of unchanged stocks was 0.

The U.S. stock market was down on the 22nd. The Dow average closed at 40,712.78 dollars, down 177.71 dollars (-0.43%), the Nasdaq closed at 17,619.36, down 299.63 points (-1.67%), and the S&P500 closed at 5,570.64, down 50.21 points (-0.89%). Weekly jobless claims had no surprises, and the sharp concern about the rapid deterioration of the labor market subsided, leading to an increase after the opening. The number of existing home sales also exceeded expectations, and selling shifted to high-tech stocks due to rising long-term interest rates. Subsequently, selling intensified due to profit-taking in anticipation of a speech by Federal Reserve Chairman Powell, and the market expanded its decline towards the end.

Although US stocks fell, the Tokyo market started cautiously. In the closed-door deliberations, BOJ Governor Ueda stated that "the financial market continues to be in an unstable situation" and "for the time being, we will closely monitor its movements with a very high level of tension." He also explained that "if we can confirm that our economic and price forecasts are being realized as we expect, we will maintain our basic stance of adjusting the degree of monetary easing". Although there was some consideration for the market, the exchange rate temporarily reached a high of 145.20 yen per dollar, leading to a stronger yen and weaker dollar. Under the influence of the stronger yen, the Nikkei average temporarily dipped into negative territory compared to the previous day. However, in the afternoon, BOJ Governor Ueda explained that there were no differences between himself and Deputy Governor Uchida, which helped alleviate concerns and put a halt to the stronger yen trend. The Nikkei average rebounded and ended the trading session.

The closing price of the Nikkei average was 38,364.27 yen, up 153.26 yen (+0.40%) from the previous day. The trading volume on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market was 1.3 billion 17.2 million shares, with a trading value of 3 trillion 400.8 billion yen. By industry, other financing business, precision instruments, construction, securities and commodity futures trading industry, and machinery rose, while only 4 sectors, wholesale trade, marine transportation, electric appliances, and information and communications industry, declined. The number of rising stocks on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market accounted for 57% and the declining stocks accounted for 38%.
