Fisco Japan ·  Aug 23 11:41

As of the close 23 days ago, the number of stocks that increased in the Nikkei average constituent stocks was 125, the number of stocks that decreased was 98, and the number of stocks that remained unchanged was 2.

The Nikkei average is down. It closed the morning session at 38,117.44 yen (approximately 600 million 30 million shares of volume) down 93.57 yen (-0.24%).

The U.S. stock market was down on the 22nd. The Dow average closed at 40,712.78 dollars, down 177.71 dollars (-0.43%), the Nasdaq closed at 17,619.36, down 299.63 points (-1.67%), and the S&P500 closed at 5,570.64, down 50.21 points (-0.89%). Weekly jobless claims had no surprises, and the sharp concern about the rapid deterioration of the labor market subsided, leading to an increase after the opening. The number of existing home sales also exceeded expectations, and selling shifted to high-tech stocks due to rising long-term interest rates. Subsequently, selling intensified due to profit-taking in anticipation of a speech by Federal Reserve Chairman Powell, and the market expanded its decline towards the end.

While U.S. stocks fell, the Tokyo market cautiously started off with a firm tone. BOJ Governor Uchida stated during the closed session, "The financial markets are still in an unstable situation" and "We will continue to closely monitor their developments with a very high level of vigilance." He also explained that "As the certainty of our economic and price outlook increases, we will maintain our basic stance of adjusting the degree of monetary easing accordingly." The exchange rate temporarily reached the 145 yen 20 sen level as the yen strengthened and the dollar weakened. As a result, the Nikkei average, which had been trading in positive territory, turned negative.

Furukawa Electric <5801>, Fujikura <5803>, Ebara Corporation <6361>, and Resonac <4004> also declined.

On the other hand, Sharp <6753> rose sharply due to reports that SoftBank <9434> will make a 100 billion yen investment.
